Teaching and Learning Mathematics Online
The original collection: practical work from instructors already teaching mathematics and statistics at a distance, organized around course design, interaction, technology, teacher education, and commentary.
The original collection
Online mathematics before it was everybody’s mathematics.
The first edition brought together working educators confronting a peculiar problem: mathematics is unusually difficult to move online well. Symbolic notation, diagrams, worked reasoning, anxiety, assessment, and student interaction all resist a simple translation from room to screen.
The result was deliberately practical. The book is organized around the things instructors actually have to do: design courses, interact with students, choose and use technology, prepare teachers, and decide what the experience teaches us.
Historical timing: the book appeared in 2020, at almost exactly the moment online teaching stopped being a specialist concern.
